Ebook a Psychosocial Assessment of Palestinian Children

As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues, reports of increased trauma amongst Palestinian children have multiplied. In order to provide a better understanding of the psychosocial well being of Palestinian children, the following assessment was undertaken by Save the Children-US and the Secretariat of the National Plan of Action for Palestinian Children (NPA), a Palestinian NGO, in collaboration with Save the Children-Sweden. Funding was provided by the United States Agency for International Development ( USAID ). The study was designed primarily to gain insight into how the children themselves view their situation, and to provide them with an open forum in which to speak.

During the months of July and August 2002, a representative, stratefied, random sample was chosen from cities, villages and refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza. Sixty-one percent (61%) of those interviewed live in the West Bank and 39% live in Gaza. Girls and boys were represented in equal proportion.

We believe this problem is solvable. In the District of Columbia more than 68,000 residents, including 35,000 children, are living on the edge of hunger. This problem is exacerbated by the paradoxical obesity rates of more than 24 percent and higher than average rates of diabetes, hypertension and other nutrition-related illness plaguing our community. The construct of perceived self-efficacy represents one core aspect of social cognitive theory (Bandura, 1992, 1997). While outcome expectancies refer to the perception of the possible consequences of one’s action, perceived self-efficacy refers to personal action control or agency. A person who believes in being able to produce a desired effect can conduct a more active and self-determined life course. Health specific self-efficacy is a person’s optimistic self-belief about being capable to resist temptations and to adopt a healthy lifestyle.As an introduction, the relationship between self-efficacy and specific health behaviors is reviewed. A number of studies on adoption of health practices have measured self-efficacy to assess its potential influences in initiating behavior change.

As people proceed from considering precautions in general to shaping a behavioral intention, contemplating detailed action plans, and actually performing a health behavior on a regular basis, they begin to believe in their capability to initiate change.

Design and Construction Evaluation of a Photovoltaic DC LED Lighting System

The market demand for commercialization of Photovoltaic (PV) systems depends a lot on the reliability, efficiency and performance of various components within the system. PV panels produce DC power when exposed to sunlight, and an inverter converts this to AC power in a typical solar powered building. Though stand-alone PV lighting systems have existed for a long time it hasn’t been very efficient in the past. Incandescent light sources were commonly used with traditional PV lighting systems which are inefficient. Today, fluorescent fixtures are mostly used with PV’s due to its high efficacy.

Light-emitting diodes (LED’s) present a new vision to energy efficiency in lighting design with their low energy consumption. Current research predicts improved efficiencies of LED light fixtures and their commercial use is a few years away. LEDs which operate on DC voltages when coupled with photovoltaics can be a simple PV lighting application and a sustainable lighting solution with potential for payback. This free e-books evaluates the design and construction of a PV DC LED lighting system for a solar house at Pennsylvania State University. A detailed cost and payback analysis of a PV DC LED lighting system is presented in this research. PV array output simulations for the solar house are presented. Results presented in this research indicate that the Solid state lighting market is evolving rapidly and that LED’s are a choice in stand-alone PV DC lighting systems. The efficiency and the cost-effectiveness of such systems would improve in the coming years with research and development now focused on photovoltaics, which are an important part of renewable energy systems and on LED’s which could possibly be the future of energy efficient lighting.

In Act 1, a beautiful and sophisticated woman called Mrs Cheveley arrives. She has been out of England. Her arrival brings trouble for Sir Robert. She has a secret letter about him and she wants him to get the government to agree to a building plan for Argentina, which will make her rich. Sir Robert tells his wife, Lady Chiltern. She asks him not to do what Mrs Cheveley wants. Mrs Cheveley then tells Lady Chiltern that Sir Robert once sold a government secret to a businessman for money. This information is revealed in Mrs Cheveley’s ‘letter’. In fact, Mrs Cheveley is using the letter to blackmail Sir Robert.

Lord Goring is a good friend to both Sir Robert and Lady Chiltern and he loves Sir Robert’s sister, Mabel. In Act 2, Goring suggests to Sir Robert that to stop Mrs Cheveley making trouble for Sir Robert, he needs to find out something bad about her. In Act 3 it is Lord Goring who is able to get the letter back, by proving to Mrs Cheveley that he knows she is a thief. Lady Chiltern is very upset because she can no longer think of her husband as honest.

In Act 3 Lord Goring is at home waiting for Lady Chiltern, who has sent him a letter asking if she can talk to him. Mrs Cheveley steals this letter while she is waiting to talk to Lord Goring. Sir Robert has also come to talk to Goring. He finds out that Mrs Cheveley is in the next room. Lord Goring thinks it is Lady Chiltern who is there and he tells Sir Robert that the lady loves him.

Thismakes Sir Robert angry with Lord Goring. Mrs Cheveley thinks that the stolen letter addressed to Goring is a love letter and she later sends it to Sir Robert.

In Act 4 Lady Chiltern learns that Sir Robert’s secret is safe, but that Mrs Cheveley has sent her (Lady Chiltern’s) letter to Goring. Sir Robert thinks the letter was written to him, and so it doesn’t make him angry, as he thinks it shows that his wife loves him again. He doesn’t want to upset her again, so when Lord Caversham tells him that the prime minister wants to give him a more important government job, he says he cannot take it. Lord Goring tells Lady Chiltern that she should let her husband take the job. It is important to him. Lady Chiltern understands this. She has changed and is able to forgive her husband. In the last scene Mabel and Goring prepare to get married and Sir Robert and Lady Chiltern’s marriage is safe.

In recent years the topic of infertility has received much public attention. This can be traced to rapid progress in New Reproductive Technologies (NRTs), legal issues concerning the biogenetic production of life and the transformative possibilities of family and relative relations (Inhorn and Balen2002:5). Similarly
some studies have been made on Infertility in the field of Anthropology. However their concern is mainly on the Reproductive Revolution, like the influence of NRTs on family systems and traditional gender relationships (Strathern1992, Inhorn 1994, 2003), and the practices and perceptions of medical doctors, patients and
people such as gamete donors and surrogate mothers who are involved in these technologies (Ginsburg et al.1995, Franklin1997, Tsuge 1999).

Despite continued dialogue over such legal, social, biological and ethical concerns, little attention has been given to the most basic tenet in this matter, namely, Love. In particular, little focus has been dedicated to love and intimacy within marriage arrangements in non-western societies, such as India. Love is generally considered as an emotional bond which is belonged to personal sphere. What I would like to deal with is the political aspect of â€˜loveâ€™ in marriage. As I will discuss in detail later, a womanâ€™s situation becomes very critical when she is not able to conceive. The main concerns in this paper are how women manage and survive the crisis of marriage and what their agency is within that. Human emotions such as love and intimacy related to infertility has been neglected so far, however the politics of love among couples, families and kinship plays a crucial role as motivation for seeking specific behavior concerning infertility. Over the course of sixty interviews with infertile couples, this paper tries try to examine how people construct social relationships based on the body, gender, and sexuality and to consider the possibility of womanâ€™s agency in Indian society through the politics of â€˜loveâ€™.
